Laser Hair Removal Q & A

by Thomas Lanchoney, MD

What is laser hair removal?

Laser hair removal uses intense, pulsating waves of light to remove unwanted hair on specific areas of your body. The heat from the lasers damages hair follicles, making it difficult for the hair to regrow. After a series of treatments the procedure effectively slows hair growth with results that may become permanent.

How is Icon laser different from other hair removal treatments?

The Icon laser varies from traditional hair removal methods in that it targets hair follicles at the source instead of simply removing hair on the skin’s surface. It’s designed to permanently and effectively reduce hair growth after a few brief, non-invasive treatments. The laser targets hair follicles, protecting surrounding skin from damage. Icon works well on a range of skin types.

What should I expect during treatment?

Each laser hair removal session takes about 30 minutes. As a gentle procedure, it doesn’t require anesthesia. You may feel warmth or tingling as our Licensed Aesthetician moves the hand-held laser device over your skin. While most patients don’t find the procedure painful, they may apply a topical anesthetic to prevent or relieve any discomfort.

How will I feel after the procedure?

Because laser hair removal is a minimally invasive and quick office visit procedure, you won’t require recovery time and can go about your daily life as usual immediately. You may notice swelling and redness of your skin during the first few hours following treatment, which should reduce on its own. Applying ice can help manage any discomfort. Avoid tanning beds and sun exposure after your session as your skin will be extra sensitive to UV rays.

How many sessions will I need?

The number of laser hair removal sessions needed varies from person to person. Our Licensed Aesthetician determines the best course of action based on factors such as the thickness and prevalence of the hair you wish to minimize and how much hair growth is reduced after your first treatment. In most cases, more than 1 session is necessary for full and lasting results.
